PM to visit Iran in near future — King

AMMAN (JT) — His Majesty King Abdullah said on Tuesday Prime Minister Faisal Fayez will visit Iran “in the near future” for talks on means to enhance bilateral economic cooperation.

King Abdullah told Iranian assistant foreign minister and presidential envoy, Sayyid Mohammad Sadr, that Jordan is keen to improve relations with the Islamic Republic, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

“Relations between the two countries will witness further cooperation and development in the near future,” Petra quoted the Monarch as saying during a meeting with Sadr, who delivered a letter from President Mohammad Khatami. King Abdullah invited the Iranian leader to visit Jordan, Petra said.

Last year, the King paid a landmark visit to Tehran, which opened a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two Muslim countries.

Sadr said Iran appreciates the Kingdom's assistance to help ease the effects of a devastating earthquake that hit the southeastern city of Bam in December. He praised the army-run field hospital, which treated more than 9,000 victims of the disaster.

Last Wednesday, Her Majesty Queen Rania flew to Bam to deliver relief supplies to its residents.

Amman, through the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, sent six planeloads of essential supplies, such as tents, blankets, medicine and basic food items.

Civil Defence Department teams helped search for survivors under the rubble.

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Minister Samir Rifai.
