Deputies' will respected, understood — Khader
By Khalid Dalal
AMMAN — The government said on Tuesday it will work with the Lower House to reach an agreement on a package of economic reforms presented to deputies by Prime Minister Faisal Fayez on Monday.“The government respects and understands the will of people's representatives” against the proposed price and tax hikes, Government Spokesperson Asma Khader told reporters after a Cabinet session.
"However, we hope to reach a formula acceptable to both parties in the coming days,” Khader said. She emphasised that government's plans to raise tax and increase prices of fuel derivatives “came after a thorough study mainly to protect the interest of the national economy.”
Khader added that the government is ready to discuss with deputies any possible alternatives, but said “other solutions are hard to find under the circumstances, particularly that Jordan is committed to its economic reform plans.”
