AMMAN — More than 255,000 Iraqi expatriates in 14 countries, including Jordan,
registered to vote in Sunday's historic elections, the International
Organisation for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday, the final day of registration.
Media officer of IOM's Out of Country Vote (OCV), Sarah Tosh, said that by the
end of Monday, 238,816 registered in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France,
Germany, Iran, Netherlands, Sweden, Syria, Turkey, UAE, UK and US, while 16,795
in Jordan.
Tosh added that final figures are to be announced today at a press conference
here. The highest registration figure was in Iran where 53,000 Iraqis signed up
during the weeklong process, which was extended by 48 hours. The IOM, which is
conducting the OCV on behalf of the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq,
predicted that around a million Iraqi expatriates would register for the
elections.
