The United States provided Jordan with assistance totaling $510.9 million in the
2006 fiscal year, of which $213.4 million was military aid and $297.5 million
economic assistance. US military assistance helped Jordan maintain its armed
forces and improve its security, according to a US embassy statement. Of the
economic assistance, $167.5 million was in the form of cash support to the state
budget and $130 million for funding the USAID programmes that support the
Kingdom’s development goals. These programmes included improving and expanding
water supplies, improving healthcare and education, and supporting the efforts
of the government and private sector to strengthen the country’s economy. The US
assistance programme to Jordan is among the largest in the world. Since 1952, US
economic assistance to Jordan has totalled over $4.7 billion, the statement
said.
