IIRO general relief
committee holds urgent meeting in Amman
AMMAN, January 31 (Petra) - The International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO)
held an emergency meeting of its general relief committee in Amman on Sunday to
discuss the situation in the tsunami-hit countries and to coordinate efforts to
help those affected by the disaster. IIRO Secretary General Adnan Basha, who
heads the committee, said around 276,000 people were killed in the disaster and
about 88,771 were missing. Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization Secretary
General Abdul Salam Abbadi said the Kingdom has conducted fundraising campaigns
and has competent teams capable of running aid and rebuilding operations. The
teams are ready to coordinate with the donors in this regard, he added.
