Exports from the QIZs
exceed $1 billion
AMMAN (Petra) — Exports from the Qualifying Industrial Zones (QIZs) exceeded $1
billion last year, rising by nine per cent from the $919 million in 2004.
According to Bilal Hmoud, director of the Industrial Development at the Ministry
of Industry and Trade, exports to the US under the Free Trade Agreement signed
between the two countries, amounted to $210.5 million. Garments, jewelry, Dead
Sea products and electric equipment were foremost of the country's exports,
Bilal indicated. At present, the country's 13 QIZs employ 46,313 workers, half
of whom are Jordanians. Investments by about 55 factories at the QIZs are
estimated at $339 million.
