Jordan, Syria to promote cooperation in IT fields

AMMAN (Petra) — Jordan and Syria on Thursday agreed to further cooperate in the fields of telecommunications and information technology, hoping to gain economic and educational benefits.

The accord was arrived at during talks between Minister of Information and Communications Technology Fawwaz Zu'bi and his Syrian counterpart Mohammad Bashir Al Munjed.

At the meeting, Zu'bi said the two sides explored all possible means for cooperation, with a focus on the utilisation of modern technology in improving the educational sector.

Jordan is committed to promoting the private sector's role and to upgrading legislation to meet the requirements of global change and to attract more investment, Zu'bi said.

The minister outlined Jordan's plans to meet the objectives and needs of the communications market and end all forms of monopoly in the telecommunications sector by opening the door to competitors.

The Syrian minister reviewed his country's experience in the communications and information technology fields. He invited Zu'bi to visit Damascus and to inspect Syria's progress in the field and also to take the necessary steps to implement the decision on upgrading cooperation in these fields.

After the talks, Prime Minister Faisal Fayez received the two ministers as well as Minister of Education Khalid Touqan to review the outcome of the negotiations and prospects for Syria to benefit from Jordan's experience through the private sector in the two countries.
