CRPD begins issuing new passports
By Rana Husseini
AMMAN — New, black-covered Jordanian passports, which comply with international standards, are now being issued by the Civil Registration and Passports Department (CRPD), an official said.Department Director Awni Yervas told The Jordan Times Tuesday that the new electronically imprinted passports are designed to prevent tampering and forgery. He said 500,000 copies of the new travel document, which now reads from the left cover, have been printed.
The passport holder's name, date and place of birth and other required information is printed on the inside left cover.
The reason the department chose black was because it is one of Jordan's flag colours.
“The passports are designed to conform with the International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements and include the latest security technology to prevent forgery,” Yervas explained.
The official said citizens holding the older version of passport are not obliged to change to the new document, which costs the same JD20 in fees to the CRPD.
He said all diplomatic missions were informed by the authorities of the issuance of the new passports.
