Khatib reiterates Kingdom's
keenness to preserve Iraqi unity
AMMAN (Petra) — Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib on Thursday reiterated
Jordan's stand against any act by any party that touches on the sanctity of the
shrines of Al al Bayt imams or other holy places.
Referring to His Majesty King Abdullah's statements in this regard, Khatib said
Jordan also condemns violence targeting innocent people in Iraq, which reflects
negatively on the country's interest.
At a meeting on Thursday with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshiyar Zebari and the
accompanying delegation, Khatib stressed the Kingdom's keenness to preserve the
unity of Iraq and the need to support the political process under way there.
Khatib said that the success of this process would play a key role in preserving
the unity of Iraq, which is important to the entire region.
The foreign minister also underlined the need to coordinate efforts to restore
security and stability in Iraq, saying it was important to intensify Arab action
to arrive at an agreement between the different segments of Iraqi society
leading to a formula that is representative of all Iraqis.
In this regard, Khatib said it was important to form a national unity government
that represents the entire spectra of Iraqi society.
For his part, Zebari commended King Abdullah's stand in support of Iraqi unity
and stability. He also praised the Monarch's condemnation of the attacks against
holy shrines in Samarra.
In addition, the Iraqi foreign minister expressed his deep appreciation for
Jordan's position and its concern for the interest of Iraq, stressing the
importance of the Kingdom's vital role and its positive impact on efforts to
achieve stability in his country.
Zebari also welcomed Jordan's readiness, under the leadership of King Abdullah,
to exert all possible political efforts at various levels to help Iraq get
through this present difficult stage.
