Jordan participates in Arab
Labour Conference
A Jordanian delegation headed by Minister of Labour Bassem Salem is taking part in the 34th
Arab Labour Conference, which started on Saturday. During the eight-day event, Arab labour
ministers and representatives from regional and international organisations are discussing
several labour-related issues including the Arab strategy for improving workers’ conditions,
implementing recommendations and agreements of the Arab Labour Organisation and facilitating
the movement of Arab workers in regional countries. On Monday, Salem said he hoped the volume of
trade between the Kingdom and Egypt would increase, noting that there were several available
investment opportunities. He said regulating the local workforce tops the ministry’s priorities,
adding that new regulations governing domestic helpers and foreign workers were part of the regulation
process. The minister said Jordan was chosen by the International Labour Organisation, along with four
other countries, to implement the Decent Work programme, which seeks to guarantee freedom, equality,
security and human dignity for workers all over the world.
