US official visits UNRWA
girls school
US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Ellen
Sauerbrey arrived in Jordan yesterday on a three-day visit, according to an
American embassy statement. Sauerbrey visited the Baqaa refugee camp, where she
toured the camp’s Preparatory “One” Girls School and its computer lab, which was
set up through funding provided by the US State Department’s Bureau of
Population, Refugees and Migration. The school is one of five UNRWA schools that
benefitted from US funding aimed at establishing and equipping computer labs in
support of the IT-based curriculum. Sauerbrey and her delegation were
accompanied by UNRWA Jordan Field Director Sheldon Pitterman and US embassy
representatives. During her visit to Jordan, Sauerbrey will hold meetings with
senior Jordanian officials, UNRWA and UNHCR personnel in Jordan, which will
focus on US support for UNRWA and Palestinian refugees and the status of Iraqi
refugees in the Kingdom.
