Deputies reiterate condemnation of Yassin assassination
AMMAN (JT) — Lower House deputies on Wednesday
called for an emergency meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Union to address
Israel's assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on Monday in the Gaza Strip.
Meeting in regular session yesterday, under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker
Nayef Fayez, the deputies reiterated their condemnation of the Hamas spiritual
and political leader's killing.
A total of 36 deputies signed a petition urging that groups of 11 deputies, from
the Lower House ranks of 110 legislators, organise themselves to provide
financial support to the families of the victims killed in the missile attack on
Yassin and his companions.
They also asked that each deputy and Cabinet member donate JD100 from their
monthly salaries to the family of Yassin.
Prime Minister Faisal Fayez attended yesterday's session and repeated Jordan's
condemnation of the assassination of Yassin, saying the attack will only spur
more violence and bloodshed and will be detrimental to the peace process and the
efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state.
