King Commends UN’s Role in the Peace Process

Amman, March 27 (Petra)—His Majesty King Abdullah II stressed the important role of the United Nations in pushing the Middle East peace process forward and build on Arab and international efforts to bring the Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiating table.

During a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, who is currently on a tour to the region, the King called for seizing the current opportunity to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region through the Arab peace initiative, which forms a basis for solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and establishing an independent Palestinian state.

The King also noted the importance of continuing coordination with Arab and international parties to revive the peace process in line with the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.

Failure to achieve peace, he said, will lead to more violence that would negatively affect the future of the region’s peoples.

His Majesty expressed appreciation of the role played by the U.N and its organizations to alleviate the economic hardships facing the Palestinians.

On Iraq, King Abdullah stressed the need for concerted international efforts to support peace and stability in that country. “Including all sectors of the Iraqi society in the national reconciliation will enable Iraqi to overcome its crisis,” he added.
