Mulki, Weissglas talk
prisoners
AMMAN (Petra) — Foreign Minister Hani Mulki on Wednesday discussed with Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's aide Dov Weissglas the issue of Jordanian
prisoners in the Jewish state.
In a telephone call, Weissglas told Mulki that the Israeli government agrees
that the problem should be solved as soon as possible.
Weissglas said he expected that an Israeli justice ministry recommendation on
the prisoners would be presented to the Israeli Cabinet in the coming few days
to take a decision on the issue.
In a related development, Jordan's Ambassador to Israel Marouf Bakhit held talks
yesterday with Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni on the same issue and
stressed the need to release all Jordanian detainees.
Meanwhile, Mulki met on Wednesday with Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou.
Mulki reiterated the importance of achieving a just, lasting and comprehensive
peace in the Middle East through establishing an independent Palestinian state.
He also stressed that any settlement must include Syria and Lebanon.
For his part, Iacovou, who arrived here Tuesday on a two-day visit, said his
country can play an important role in the region through its EU membership.
