Rifai, Majali
meet with US congressional aides
Senate President Zeid Rifai on Sunday met with a delegation of US congressional
aides currently on a visit to the Kingdom. During the meeting, Rifai highlighted
His Majesty King Abdullah’s address in the US Congress last month, in which he
appealed for American support for the Middle East peace process to create new
possibilities for the region and the entire world. The Senate president, who
reviewed the latest political developments in the Middle East, particularly in
Iraq, highlighted the importance of the role of the international community in
restoring stability and security in the war-torn country. At the meeting,
attended by members of the Upper House External Affairs Committee, Rifai briefed
the delegation on the Senate’s accomplishments during its last session, during
which it endorsed 52 laws related to the development of political, educational
and economic life. Also on Sunday, the US congressional aides met with Lower
House Speaker Abdul Hadi Majali, who affirmed the significance of supporting the
Arab Peace Initiative, adding that peace and stability in the region will only
be achieved through Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied lands. At last week’s
Riyadh summit, Arab leaders reaffirmed the commitment of all Arab states to the
initiative, which was launched at the 2002 Beirut summit.
