Jordan rejects Israeli threats

AMMAN, April 4 (AFP) - Jordan has warned Israel against harming Yasser Arafat after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon turned up the heat on the veteran Palestinian leader, saying he could be an assassination target.

“These persistent threats only increase tension and escalate violence in the Palestinian territories and do not serve peace,” Minister of State and Government Spokesperson Asma Khader told AFP on Friday.

“This threat follows political assassinations that Jordan has condemned,” she added, referring most recently to Israel's assassination on March 22 of the spiritual leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.
