Premier calls for strengthening students' sense of loyalty

AMMAN (Petra) — Prime Minister Faisal Fayez held talks on Saturday with presidents of private and public universities, stressing the role they can play alongside other academic institutions to bridge the gap between citizens and the authority.

Fayez called for strengthening students' sense of loyalty and belonging as well as applying educational programmes designed to spread awareness of political issues among the younger generation. He said such academic programmes should enhance knowledge and respect for others' opinions among the student body.

The presidents underlined the need for a unified course on national education to ensure students' knowledge of Jordan's history, political system and its Constitution.

Also Saturday, Fayez received at his office Jamal Zahalqa and Wassel Taha, members of the Israeli Knesset representing the National Democratic Assembly bloc. Talks focused on the latest developments in the Palestinian lands.

Meanwhile, Fayez is scheduled to chair a meeting today at the Ministry of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs to discuss the government's anti-corruption plans. Participants will include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Mohammad Halaiqa, Minister of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Daoudiyeh, Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Salah Bashir, Finance Minister Mohammad Abu Hammour and President of the Audit Bureau Salem Khazaaleh.

At press time late Saturday, the prime minister was still in talks with heads of the professional associations. In addition Minister of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Daoudiyeh and Minister of Interior Samir Habashneh were meeting with Islamic Action Front deputies in a bid to ease tension between the government and the Islamists.
