Khasawneh Affirms Jordan’s
Interest in the International Humanitarian Law
Amman, April 11 (Petra)—President of the National Commission for the
Implementation of International Humanitarian Law, (IHL) Lieutenant General
Ma’moun Khasawneh, said Jordan has been focusing for along time on highlighting
international humanitarian law and human rights.
During a meeting with deans of law faculties at Jordanian universities, he said
the formation of the commission through a Royal decree in 1998 and the issuance
of law no. 63 in 2002, reflect the interest given by Jordan to this issue.
The formation of the commission, he said, constitutes an important step in
activating an implementing the international humanitarian law, which seeks to
preserve rights given to victims of armed conflicts. “It also reflects keenness
of the state to meet commitments to respect the international humanitarian law.
LT. General Khasawneh said the commission contributed, in cooperation of the Red
Cross mission in Amman, to spreading rules of the international humanitarian law
on the local level and teaching them at universities, schools and armed forces.
Jordan was the first Arab country to create a national commission for the
implementation of International Humanitarian Law to give advice to the concerned
authorities in order to harmonize the national law with the international
treaties and conventions.
