AMAL conference
opens
By Mohammad Ghazal
AMMAN — A group of private school students along
with their peers from the region on Thursday presented their vision of the Arab
League at the opening of the first Amman Model Arab League (AMAL) conference in
the capital.
During the four-day event, the students will discuss the best way to reform the
present structure of the league, in addition to initiatives to establish an Arab
Parliament, Security Council and Court of Justice.
Participants will also discuss ways to remove border controls and custom
tariffs, and the introduction of a unified currency in the Arab world. AMAL is a
simulation of the Arab League's Social Affairs Council and the Arab Economic
Unity Council.
Students will represent delegates from member countries of the league on a mock
committee and convene to work out feasible solutions to problems.
The event, organised by the Modern Montessori School (MMS), seeks to improve the
students' knowledge and understanding of the Arab world, promote solidarity and
unity, enhance dialogue among youth and boost cross-cultural communication, as
well as teach them to use diplomacy and develop their leadership skills.
“Such a model will raise students' awareness on regional issues, deepen their
understanding and develop their research, debating and social skills,” Jihan Abu
Awad, an IB teacher at the MMS, told The Jordan Times.
Arab Civic Societies Commissioner Taher Al Masri, deputising for Arab League
Secretary General Amr Musa, inaugurated the event yesterday, in which 150
students from the Kingdom and the region are participating.
