Lower House issues statement supporting King's peace efforts

AMMAN (Petra) — The Lower House issued a statement on Saturday voicing full support for His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts to revive the Middle East peace process on the basis of international legitimacy, the restoration of the Palestinian people's rights and the establishment of an independent state on Palestinian soil.

The statement, issued to coincide with the start of King Abdullah's visit to the US where he will discuss developments in the Palestinian territories and Iraq, reaffirms Jordan's demand that a just settlement requires an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands. The statement calls for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese and Syrian lands so that security and peace can be established in the region.

It also reaffirms House support for the King's comprehensive reform process.

The statement expressed dismay over (US) stands regarding a just and final status solution to the Palestinian question, considering them an unjustified biased position that would escalate rejection of US policy. It said the US ought to be assuming the role of a neutral mediator between Israel and the Palestinians, paving the ground for the resumption of peace negotiations based on the principles of justice and equality and UN resolutions concerning the Palestinian question.
