TRC public forum slated for May 5
AMMAN (JT) — The Telecommunications Regulatory
Commission (TRC) will hold a public forum next Wednesday to initiate the process
for issuing the future licensing programme for the fixed telecommunications
subsector after liberalisation.
The future licensing programme is expected to achieve a wide domain of
objectives such as regulating the provision of public services, expansion of
telecommunications networks and services, regulating the telecommunications
market structure and establishing a competition framework, according to a TRC
statement.
The purpose of the forum is to facilitate the participation of interested
parties in the buildup towards the finalisation of the process and procedures to
be followed in licensing new entrants in the fixed telecommunications subsector.
It is hoped that this forum will lead to greater clearance and understanding of
the approach that will be followed to develop a licensing programme for the
fixed telecommunication subsector, the statement said.
The forum, to be held under the patronage of Minister of Information and
Communications Technology Fawaz Zu'bi, will also present further details
regarding the future regulatory programme outlined in the public notice released
on March 31.
In accordance with the Statement of Government Policy of Information &
Communications Technology Sectors & Postal Sector, the TRC's approach in the
telecommunications sub-sector liberalisation process is to fully open the
telecommunications market to competition in supply of services, and hence,
impose no restriction on the range or type of fixed services that will be
licensed.
In addition, no viable technology will be excluded from use in the provision of
licensed services, the statement concluded.
