Abu Obeid urges women to
take part in municipal elections
Ministry of Municipal Affairs Secretary General Jamal Abu Obeid has urged women
to take part in the municipal elections, slated for July. Abu Obeid said women
are a major partner in the policymaking process, therefore the municipal law
grants women a 20 per cent quota in municipal councils. He added that the new
law has also reduced the age of eligible voters from 19 to 18 years to allow a
wider range of citizens, an estimated 150,000 young people, to take part in the
ballots. The official made the remarks at a seminar on electoral campaigns.
