Bakhit meets with IMF official
Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Monday received Saadah Shami, who is heading an
International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation currently visiting the country.
During the meeting, Shami briefed the prime minister on the delegates’
evaluation of Jordan’s economic performance in 2006-2007 and future economic
expectations. The evaluation showed that the Kingdom’s economic performance was
good in 2006 and in the first quarter of 2007. The delegation also estimated
this year’s growth at around 6 per cent, while inflation pressures resulting
from the rise in oil prices on the international level are starting to recede,
Shami said. Exports are growing at sound rates, which will help eliminate the
deficit in the balance of payments, he added. Foreign and Arab investments are
witnessing a noticeable growth this year, a continuation of its upward trend in
2006 which will reflect on the Central Bank of Jordan’s net assets, according to
the IMF official.
