Ma'an's special needs children to benefit from new centre

RAJEF (Petra) — Their Royal Highnesses Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath on Thursday inaugurated a new centre in Rajef in the Ma'an governorate that will provide services to disabled children with special needs.

The centre was financed by the Jordan National Red Crescent Society in conjunction with the European Union and the French government.

In remarks at the inauguration ceremony, Prince Hassan expressed his appreciation of the efforts of concerned parties in providing humanitarian service to local handicapped children.

Prince Hassan said the Ma'an and Sharat regions, in southern Jordan, have witnessed major strides in development and construction under the late King Hussein and said this will continue under His Majesty King Abdullah.

JNRCS President Mohammad Hadid delivered a speech in which he said that the $220,000 centre aims to secure health and rehabilitation services for disabled children who require special education.

According to Hadid, the centre currently accommodates 22 handicapped children aged two to 16 years cared for by a team of qualified and experienced trainers.

Hadid announced that the JNRCS plans to open an X-ray unit in Ma'an to offer humanitarian services to special needs children in the Ma'an governorate.

The French government contributed JD42,000 to the project, covering 20 per cent of the cost. The centre's houses various facilities meeting the children basic needs, including a computer room and a children's play room.

Several deputies from Ma'an and other local officials attended the inauguration ceremony.
