Thuheirat urges women
take part in municipal elections
JERASH (Petra) — Minister of Municipal Affairs Nader Thuheirat on Thursday
highlighted the importance of women’s participation in the forthcoming municipal
elections. Thuheirat, who made the remarks in a seminar at the Jerash
Municipality, said the allocation of 211 out of 929 municipal council seats for
women would ensure women’s role in the decision-making process. During the
seminar, Jerash Governor Mohammad Rawashdeh talked about the evolution of
democratic legislation in Jordan, referring to women’s role in parliamentary and
municipal elections, in addition to their involvement in political life and the
economic and social development taking place in Jordan. According to Rawashdeh,
the five municipal councils in the Governorate of Jerash have 43 members, of
which 10 seats are allocated for women.
