Women's role in political
process reviewed
AMMAN (JT) — HRH Princess Basma on Monday said that reform was the goal of all
Jordanians including women who agree on the objectives of the process.
The Princess made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of US
congressional aides currently on a visit to the Kingdom at the Jordanian
Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD).
The meeting tackled the Kingdom's reform process with regard to empowering
Jordanian women, in addition to poverty and unemployment.
Discussions also covered women's participation in the public sector and measures
taken by the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) and JOHUD in
empowering women at all levels, especially at the grassroots.
Princess Basma commended the parliamentary quota for women adopted in the
Kingdom, saying that it “has opened doors for women to have a bigger and a more
active role in the political process.”
JNCW Secretary General Amal Sabbagh and JOHUD Deputy Executive Director Eman
Nimri also attended the meeting and delivered brief presentations on programmes
carried out by their respective organisations to empower women and enhance their
participation in all fields.
Prime Minister Adnan Badran on Monday also met with the US congressional aides
and discussed bilateral relations and regional developments. The premier
highlighted the need for combined international efforts to help the Palestinians
and the Israelis overcome obstacles on the way of achieving peace and security.
He also underlined the importance of supporting the Iraqi government to enhance
the work of its national institutions.
Also yesterday, the delegation met separately with members of the Lower House
Arab and International Affairs Committee, and the Senate Foreign Affairs
Committee for talks on bilateral relations and the latest regional developments.
The US delegation is on a seven-day visit to learn about Jordan's proactive
reform agenda on the political, economic and social levels.
