Qasrawi calls for
implementation of Sharm El Sheikh accords
LUXEMBOURG (Petra) — Foreign Minister Farouq Qasrawi on Tuesday called on the
international community to help the Palestinian government rebuild its
institutions.
Speaking at a working dinner during the Seventh EU-Mediterranean Conference, the
minister also urged the EU countries to work for stronger ties with their
partners in the South Mediterranean region.
Qasrawi called for the implementation of the Sharm El Sheikh accords, that call
for the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, and alleviating the daily
suffering of the Palestinian people.
He reiterated Jordan's call for the planned Israeli withdrawal from Gaza to be
carried out on time as part of the roadmap for Middle East peace.
The foreign minister said the Palestinians' January election of President
Mahmoud Abbas was a true expression of their willingness for peace.
During an address he delivered earlier Tuesday on the second day of the
conference, Qasrawi urged the EU countries to further open their markets to
goods manufactured by their partner countries in the region.
Qasrawi met with several participants, including EU foreign policy chief Javier
Solana, on the sidelines of the meeting.
EU foreign ministers, whose countries are partners in the Barcelona process
launched 10 years ago are participating in the conference.
The EU partners in the region, along with Jordan, are the Palestinian Authority,
Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Syria, Tunisia Turkey and Israel.
