Refugee transfer a
temporary measure — Khader
AMMAN (JT) — The government on Wednesday denied that transferring refugees from
the no-man's-land camp on the Jordanian-Iraqi border to Rweished signalled a
change in the Kingdom's stand of not admitting any refugees. Minister of Culture
and Government Spokesperson Asma Khader said the measure was a temporary one
until the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) finds a solution
for them. She added that the action was a humanitarian measure, and designed to
facilitate the UNHCR's work. On Monday, the government transferred all 743
refugees from the no-man's-land to the Rweished camp. During her weekly press
briefing, Khader also referred to a Cabinet decision on Tuesday approving the
establishment of a multipurpose free zone in Karameh on the Jordanian-Iraqi
border by a Saudi company. She said the company's investment is estimated at $85
million and would create some 20,000 job opportunities.
