Birthrate drop positive
development — official
A recent survey showed that the birth rate in Jordan dropped from 3.7 in 2002 to
3.4 in 2005. Higher Population Council Secretary General Zuheir Kayed said the
drop is a positive development and an indication of the success of reproductive
health services in the country. The study also indicated that married men and
women believe the ideal number of children in the family should be 4.2 and 4.3,
respectively. Meanwhile, unmarried men put the figure at 3.7 on average and
unmarried women at 3.3 children. The Media Partners for Family Health Programme,
in cooperation with the Department of Statistics, conducted the study.
