5 more IAF members arrested
AMMAN — The government on Wednesday said authorities have arrested five more members of the Islamic Action Front
(IAF) suspected of “threatening national security.”
Government Spokes- person Nasser Judeh said the five Islamists were arrested on Monday. He added that two out of five
other IAF members detained in May were released last week.
“Seven IAF members are now in custody, and investigation is under way,” Judeh told The Jordan Times.
But, according to IAF Secretary General Zaki Ben Irsheid, authorities arrested nine Islamists in connection with
municipal elections on July 31.
An IAF statement said their official website was “sabotaged after publishing news on the government’s campaign against
the party”.
Judeh refuted the claims and denied the government is “targeting” the Islamists.
“The government only targets those who threaten national security and stability,” Judeh said.
Mea
nwhile, an official said the arrest of the five Islamists in Zarqa three days ago was part of a “security
operation to hunt a terror group” in the city. The official gave no further details.
The opposition IAF is the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood and has 17 seats in the 110-member Lower House.
