National agricultural conference to open June 16

AMMAN (Petra) — The Jordan Agricultural Engineers Association (JAEA) will open the first national agricultural conference at the Royal Cultural Centre on June 16 to focus attention on Jordan's agricultural system and problems facing production.

JAEA President Hassan Jaber and Hassan Ziyadeh, the conference's chairperson, told a press conference Monday that representatives of 12 Arab countries will take part in the meeting, which will be held under the theme “a national strategy for promoting the agricultural sector at the advent of the 21st century.”

The three-day conference, to be held under Royal patronage, will review 15 working papers covering a wide range of topics, including the production of fruits and vegetables, livestock, animal feed, product marketing, agricultural insurance, guest workers and problems facing the country's agricultural sector, among others.

The conference will evaluate present agricultural policies and plans for the coming decade to meet regional and international trends, social and economic dimensions of the agricultural sector and the role of non-governmental organisations in promoting the industry.

The countries to be represented at the meeting are Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Palestine, Kuwait, Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen, in addition to Jordan.
