than November’
By Khalid Neimat and Hani Hazaimeh
AMMAN — Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Tuesday reiterated that parliamentary
elections will be held by the end of this year, “no later than November”.
“The government will announce the precise and final date of the parliamentary
polls in the coming few weeks,” Bakhit told a news conference.
“The current Parliament is now in recess and will only be dissolved by a Royal
Decree, in line with the Constitution.”
Al Rai Arabic daily quoted informed sources as saying the vote is expected to be
held on November 25, and the current Parliament will remain until August 5.
The premier said the first session of the new Parliament will convene in
December. He added that the expected turnout “requires the government to train
and prepare 40,000 people to conduct and monitor the electoral process in a
successful, accurate and transparent manner”.
Parliamentary polls will follow municipal elections due to be held July 31.
According to Bakhit, around two million citizens have registered to vote in
municipal elections.
