Foreign Ministry
following up on prisoners' issue
AMMAN (JT) — The Foreign Ministry is following with concern the condition of
Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails, according to ministry spokesperson Rajab
Suqairi.
His Majesty King Abdullah directed the government to give priority to the detainee issue and to place it on the top of its agenda, he said. Suqairi said Jordan's Ambassador to Israel Maarouf Bakhit would follow up on the prisoners' issue with the Israeli authorities to secure their freedom.
Some of the prisoners were freed earlier this year and an estimated 25 Jordanians remain in Israeli jails. Families of the detainees have staged protests in front of the UN office in Amman to demand that the international community put pressure on the Israeli authorities to release the prisoners.
