Jordanian women nominated for `1,000 Women for Nobel Peace Prize 2005'

AMMAN (Petra) — Four prominent Jordanian women were announced as the Kingdom's nominees for the “1,000 Women for Nobel Peace Prize 2005” programme on Wednesday.

Swiss Ambassador in Amman Paul Widmer announced the names at a press conference yesterday: Laurice Hlass, the first Jordanian female ambassador; Insaf Arafat, the first Jordanian women gynaecologist; Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, regional director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and Judge Taghreed Hikmat.

All the nominees from 150 countries — women with effective contributions to peace —were named simultaneously yesterday. The programme's objective is to nominate 1,000 women to collectively represent millions of women worldwide who are daily engaged in working for a better future.
