Jordan to name new envoy to Iraq

AMMAN, July 1 (AFP) - Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher on Wednesday said Jordan will name a new ambassador to Iraq in an effort to bolster the return of sovereignty to the eastern neighbor.

“Jordan has taken the decision to name an ambassador to Iraq,” Muasher told the Jordan News Agency, Petra. “This decision stems from Jordan's strong belief on the need to stand alongside our brothers in Iraq during this important and transitional period and in a bid to bolster Iraq's sovereignty.”

Jordan welcomed the transfer of power from the US-led coalition forces to the Iraqi government on Monday and said it was ready to help with all its capacities.

After the US-led war on Iraq last year, Jordan recalled its ambassador from Baghdad but was one of the few countries to keep its embassy open, with a skeleton staff headed by a charge d'affaires. On Aug. 7, the mission in Baghdad was the target of a devastating car bomb attack that killed 14 people and wounded more than 40.

The embassy was relocated to another area in the Iraqi capital.
