Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee Meets US Delegation

The Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee discussed today with a delegation of US Congressional aides relations between Jordan and the United States as well as the situation in the region.

Assistant Senate President, Senator Laila Sharaf highlighted efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II to achieve peace in the region and resume peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Sharaf pointed to Jordan's supportive stance towards the unity of Iraq, stressing the need to end sectarian fighting and start a national dialogue to enable Iraq to resume its role on the Arab and international levels.

On the domestic level, she said Jordan would continue the economic and social development process led by His Majesty, highlighting accomplishments that have been achieved over the past few years, mainly increasing the participation of women and youth in the political process.

During the meeting, members of the senate's committee reviewed situation in the region, pointing to the daily suffering of the Palestinians as a result of the Israeli occupation.

They also highlighted the need for concerted international efforts to achieve peace in the region.
