QIZ workers
relocated following investigations
AMMAN (JT) — The Ministry of Labour on Tuesday oversaw the transfer of 623
Bangladeshi labourers working in the Qualified Industrial Zones (QIZ) from
companies implicated in workers’ rights violations, the Jordan News Agency,
Petra, reported. Minster of Labour Bassem Salem said the transfer process, which
was also supervised by the embassy of Bangladesh, involved relocating the
workers in question to other QIZ companies proved compliant with laws after a
series of inspections carried out by ministry teams. The inspection campaign was
intensified after an international report highlighted human rights violations in
some factories in QIZs. Following the report by the US National Labour
Committee, the Labour Ministry developed a detailed action plan to address the
problem that included procedures to be taken in cooperation with other
stakeholders such as the International Labour Organisation, and the ministries
of health and interior, among others.
