US provides $200m to Jordan in
economic aid
By Issam Qadamani
AMMAN — Jordan on Sunday received $200 million from the US — the last part of an
additional $700 million in economic assistance, a senior official said.
Minister of Finance Mohammad Abu Hammour told Al
Rai and The Jordan Times that the aid will support the Treasury and help Jordan
cope with oil supplies disruption after the war in Iraq.
The additional assistance was made under the Emergency Wartime Supplemental
Appropriations Act 2003, approved by the US Congress in April.
Under the act, the US pledged to provide Jordan with $700 million in additional
economic and $406 million in military assistance in 2003.
The US administration has allocated $456 million in economic and military aid to
Jordan for 2005 — $250 million will be dedicated to support economy and $206
million will be provided as military assistance.
Last month, the US granted Jordan $119.05 million in economic aid to help the
government reduce foreign debt and bolster development plans.
The US financial assistance to Jordan is considered among the largest aid
programmes in the world, according to the US embassy. It has exceeded $2.3
billion over the last decade, while during the last two years it exceeded $1
billion.
