King Meets US Congressmen
Amman, July 24(Petra) -- His Majesty King
Abdullah said that the deteriorating situation in Lebanon and Palestine hinders
opportunities of realizing comprehensive and genuine peace in the region.
During a meeting on Monday with US congressmen delegation, headed by Republican
Deputy Pete Hoekstra (Michigan), the King affirmed the necessity of promoting
capabilities of the Lebanese government and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)
to overcome the suffering of the Lebanese and the Palestinian peoples.
King Abdullah warned that targeting innocent civilians and the infrastructure
would increase the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and the Palestinian lands.
'' Jordan will continue exerting efforts with Arab states and the international
powers to find an outlet to the crisis facing the region,'' the King said,
adding regional comprehensive peace and stability could not be reached without
finding a just settlement for the Palestinian issue.
His Majesty pointed to the important role of the US in supporting the resumption
of peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
On the Iraqi issue, the King stressed Jordan's support to efforts aimed at
achieving security and stability in the country, noting the deteriorating
security situation could lead to further violence, suffering, and division
amongst Iraqis.
For his part, Hoekstra hailed efforts of the King to establish peace and
security, adding Jordan is deemed to be a regional model in moderation.
