Precautionary security
measures taken
By Mahmoud Al Abed
AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) said on Sunday it was taking
precautionary measures to protect tourist attractions and urban centres.
The measures were described by PSD Head of the Media Office Major Bashir Daajah
as a continuation of a security plan introduced earlier this year.
Daajah said the measures aim to prevent any potential terrorist act in the wake
of Saturday's attacks in Sharm El Sheikh and are intended to “maintain Jordan's
image as a country of security and stability.”
The officer said that PSD Director Lieutenant General Mohammad Majed Aitan met
yesterday with police directors and commanders of units concerned with
protecting populated areas and tourists. The general directed his men to step up
their efforts to ensure the safety of tourists, residents and citizens.
The chief policeman stressed that police units “should maintain full readiness
to handle any security emergency.”
Daajah said in a statement that the police “would not allow anyone to mess with
the security and safety of Jordan's guests, who will be ensured safe and
enjoyable vacations and residence. “
The PSD spokesperson noted that security measures have been intensified since
the beginning of the current year while a special plan went into effect at the
beginning of the tourist season in May. He said that the PSD is coordinating
these preventive measures with the other security agencies.
Daajah urged citizens and guests to cooperate with the security people and
communicate to them any security-related tip “however insignificant it might
sound.” He said emergency calls can be made at 196 and 191. Police departments
in governorates can be reached at 192.
The major reassured citizens that police forces are capable of dealing with any
emerging threat to the country's security, reminding of the authorities'
successes over the past years in handling “the most difficult of security
situation.
