Ceasefire in Lebanon a priority — Khatib

By Khaled Nuaimat

AMMAN — A ceasefire is the priority to end bloodshed in Lebanon, Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib told reporters during a weekly press gathering on Tuesday.

He added that the government “would support the Lebanese government to have full sovereignty.”

Meanwhile, Government Spokesperson Nasser Judeh told reporters that Jordan has contributed its utmost efforts to end the current Israeli aggression in Lebanon and Palestine.

He noted that “His Majesty King Abdullah has been leading these efforts by contacting all concerned parties, and supporting both the Palestinian and the Lebanese peoples.” He highlighted local relief efforts for both conflict zones, as well as the Monarch’s initiative to send a field hospital to treat victims of the military operations in Lebanon.

Judeh said that Jordan would welcome those who fled Lebanon as result of the current security situation there. Meanwhile, in response to a question on the impact of the surge in oil prices on the national economy, Judeh said, without further elaboration, that “the government has prepared plans to deal with such situations.”
