Jordan, Japan, UNESCO launch Iraqi archaeology training session
The Department of Antiquities, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and UNESCO on Thursday launched a training programme for Iraqi archaeologists and other experts. Like a similar training session held two years ago, the participants will receive practical training in Umm Qais and lectures by Japanese and UNESCO experts in order to study preservation methods before heading to Iraqi archaeological sites. In his address at the opening, Japanese Ambassador Shigenobu Kato emphasised his government’s support for the Iraqi people and expressed hope that the programme would help them preserve their country’s historical treasures. Jordan and Japan have previously worked together to give expert training in areas such as electricity, water resource management, education, and culture to over 500 Iraqis, according to the Japanese embassy.
