Jordan reiterates support for Palestinian rights
AMMAN (Petra) — Prime Minister Faisal Fayez on
Tuesday renewed Jordan's commitment to help the Palestinian people attain their
legitimate rights and establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem
as its capital.
At a meeting with a Palestinian delegation, led by Speaker of the Palestine
Legislative Council Rawhi Fattouh, Fayez said Jordanian-Palestinian cooperation
at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague had had a positive
impact on the court's ruling that Israel's separation barrier is illegal, which
led to the UN General Assembly passing a historic resolution in favour of the
Palestinian cause.
At the meeting, also attended by Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher, Fayez said
Jordan's stand on the barrier reflected the Kingdom's keenness to safeguard
Jordanian-Palestinian interests. He said the wall undermines the Palestinian
people's hope for an independent state and constitutes a serious threat to
Jordan's national security.
Reaffirming support for the roadmap peace plan, Fayez said Jordan would maintain
its assistance to the Palestinians and coordinate its stand with the Palestinian
leadership.
In an expression of appreciation for Jordan's regional and international stand
in support of the Palestinian cause, Fattouh said the Kingdom's support stems
from the strong ties that reflect the strong fraternal relations between the two
peoples. He expressed gratitude for Jordan's efforts at the ICJ and the UN
General Assembly.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian delegation also met yesterday with Minister of
Political Development Mohammad Daoudiyeh who spoke about plans under way to
increase the participation of women and youth in the modernisation process. The
minister also outlined plans to develop judicial and media laws and promote the
work of political parties.
