Labour Ministry to launch hotline for foreign workers

AMMAN (JT) — The Ministry of Labour (MoL) on Monday said by next week it would launch a hotline for foreign workers. A source in the MoL told The Jordan Times that five employees who speak the languages of the majority of foreign workers, mainly Filipino, Sinhala, Tamil, Chinese, Urdo and Indonesian would receive the workers’ complaints. “They would also introduce them to the ministry officials who in turn could help solve problems in coordination with the concerned embassies,” the source added, saying that this is one step the MoL has taken to reinforce the Labour Law and international labour standards, in particular a “decent and safe work environment.” The International Labour Organisation, during its conference in June, named Jordan among the countries of the Middle East and North Africa to implement the “decent work” programme. Meanwhile, a source in the MoL said last week the ministry is determined to crack down on the abuse of foreign workers in the country’s Qualified Industrial Zones.
