Jordan IP Week 2004 begins August 23
By Rami Abdelrahman
AMMAN — The second annual “Jordan IP Week 2004” will start on Aug. 23, under the
patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah, bringing together international and
local intellectual property (IP) experts to discuss critical issues affecting
the IP environment.
The organisers, Jordan Intellectual Property
Association (JIPA), hope to provide a platform where public and private sector
organisations can discuss and propose solutions through interactive workshops
that will offer participants an insight into the world of IP and conclude with
workable recommendations.
“Whenever you are developing new products and services, and new markets for
existing products and services, it is essential to create an intellectual
property strategy. For instance, what trademarks need protection and what patent
activity is required?” JIPA Chairman Muhannad Bushnaq said.
“The Jordan IP Week 2004 aims to enhance the Jordanian public's knowledge of IP
rights and laws through tailored seminars and workshops that will be held during
the forum,” Bushnaq said in a statement.
In addition, seminars will emphasise the importance of IPRs in accelerating
national economies and allowing corporations to expand their businesses.
The Kingdom will join a World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) union
for international registration of trademarks before the end of 2004, according
to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Mohammad Halaiqa.
Joining such treaties is a requirement of the Free Trade Agreement between the
United States and Jordan, and other similar trade agreements.
Jordan IP Week 2004 is organised by JIPA and the International Intellectual
Property Institute (IIPI), Washington DC, sponsored by United States Patents and
Trademarks Office (USPTO), World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), and
supported by the USAID-funded AMIR Programme.
JIPA is a nonprofit, volunteer-based business association created to protect
intellectual property rights in Jordan. Since its establishment in 1998, JIPA
has actively worked to strengthen the intellectual property system in Jordan and
enhance the public's knowledge of intellectual property rights through a variety
of activities conducted in partnership with both the public and private sectors.
