Premier, Hashemi discuss Iraq
AMMAN (JT) - Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit called Thursday for effective Arab action to support the political process in Iraq, which he said should involve all components of the population.
At a meeting with Iraq’s Vice President Tareq Hashemi, Bakhit also discussed the question of Iraq’s oil exports to Jordan.
Hashemi, a key Sunni leader, briefed the premier on the latest political developments and the security situation in Iraq. He outlined efforts exerted by the Iraqi government to achieve security and stability. During the meeting, attended by Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib, Bakhit said Arabs should help address the “grave” situation in Iraq, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Hashemi acquainted the premier with the position of Iraqi Accord Front, the largest Sunni bloc which has pulled out from the government of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki citing his failure to meet a list of conditions. Meanwhile, an Iraqi security delegation will visit Jordan this week for talks on the security situation in Iraq and terrorism, Iraq’s Ambassador to Jordan Saad Hayyani told Agence France-Presse on Thursday.
Hayyani said: “A security delegation, chaired by Iraq’s national security adviser Muwafaq Rubaiee and representatives of Iraqi security departments, will visit Jordan next week to examine security affairs between Iraq and Jordan.”
The delegation will hold talks with Jordanian officials August 14-15 to discuss coordination related to security issues and exchange viewpoints on the security situation in Iraq, he said. On Thursday, a two-day meeting on the security situation in Iraq concluded in Damascus with the participation of representatives from several countries, including Jordan.
