Amendment to JVA law to encourage investments in
Jordan Valley
By Ramadan Rawashdeh
AMMAN Minister of Water and Irrigation Kamel Mahadin on Monday said the ministry has proposed a major amendment to the Jordan Valley Authority law, and will present it soon to the Cabinet.
Mahadin, who was talking to Al Ra'i reporters on Monday, said the amendment is aimed to encourage agricultural investments in the Jordan Valley.
Mahadin said the Japanese government has given a $60 million grant to Jordan to upgrade the capacity of the Zai Water Treatment Plant from 45 million cubic metres per annum to 90 million cubic metres. The project is estimated to cost $75 million, the minister said.
He pointed out that Zai is currently working at maximum daily capacity of 114,000 cubic metres. The minister said the plant will be able to store water for one week in accordance with its modernisation plan, to cope with any emergency.
In line with the administrative reforms adopted by the government, the ministry has embarked on restructuring the water sector units, including the establishment of special units for water projects in the Greater Amman area.
The minister estimated the costs of replacing and rehabilitating the water networks in Amman governorate at JD200 milion, while the costs of rehabilitating the network for the other governorates are JD100 million.
The minister said work is under way to construct Al Wihda Dam at a total cost of JD140 million. Mahadin pointed out that Libya has showed interest in providing concrete pipes to bring water from the Disi Basin to Amman, noting that the cost of the project is estimated at $652 million.
