Al-Ali holds talks with US officiale

AMMAN, August 28 (JT) - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali on Monday met with Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Ellen Sauerbrey. Discussions covered the mechanisms of cooperation and support the Kingdom needs in order to ensure the delivery of basic services to Jordanians, residents and guests alike. Al-Ali described the various economic challenges Jordan is facing, particularly in light of the continuous rise in international oil prices, which is leading to large deficits in both the budget and current accounts, in addition to other challenges including poverty and unemployment. The minister said the ongoing political instability in the region and the influx of Iraqis to Jordan is placing further pressures on the Kingdom's already scarce resources, particularly in the water, energy, health and education sectors. In addition, she reiterated the government's commitment to pooling all available resources in order to provide non-Jordanians with high-quality services, while continuing to implement its reform agenda that aims at enhancing the standards of living for all citizens. For her part, Sauerbrey said that the US administration realizes the pressures that Jordan is facing due to the large number of migrants from neighboring countries. In this context, she confirmed US commitment to work with the government of Jordan and various concerned international institutions to explore possible mechanisms to support the Kingdom.
