Bakhit signs on to Decent Work
Programme for Jordan
AMMAN (Petra) — Jordan and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) signed a
memorandum of understanding on Friday to implement the Decent Work Pilot Programme
(DWPP) to enhance work-related issues in the country.
The memo was signed by Labour Minister Bassem Salem and head of the ILO Juan Somavia
in Pusan following a meeting with the latter official and Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit.
The DWPP, which will help the country in implementing international labour standards,
seeks to improve production capacity and work environments as well as to create jobs,
support development and protect workers’ rights.
The ILO will support Jordan with technical assistance to implement the programme over
the coming three years.
Also Friday, Bakhit met with South Korean Prime Minister Han Myung-sook in Seoul and
discussed bilateral cooperation.
Bakhit also addressed the possibility of sending Jordanian students to South Korea to
receive IT training.
For her part, the South Korean premier stressed the importance of Bakhit’s visit to
the country and referred to His Majesty King Abdullah’s visit to South Korea in 2004.
Meanwhile, Bakhit and the accompanying delegation visited the headquarters of LG
Electronics in Seoul.
Bakhit reviewed measures to create and develop investment, expressing hope for more
cooperation to turn Jordan into a marketing and production centre for the company.
Director of LG Electronics Ssang Soo Kim said the company is studying the possibility
of turning Jordan into a centre for exporting the products to neighbouring markets.
