Jordanian, Egyptian Foreign
Ministers Meet with Solana
Cairo, Sept.5 (Petra)—Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Al Khatib and his Egyptian
counterpart discussed with EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana in Cairo, the
situation in the Middle East and the stance of the parties on the international
peace meeting called for by the U.S. President George Bush this fall.
A spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the three officials stressed
the need to prepare properly for the peace meeting to have positive results,
adding failure to achieve such results will reflect negatively on the situation
in the region.
The officials urged other parties, mainly the United States, to seize the
current opportunity and urge the Palestinians and Israelis to intensify their
political contacts to achieve a peaceful settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict.
Solana told reports ahead of departing Cairo, that his talks with Khatib and
Abul Ghait touched on the situation in the Middle East as well as meetings that
will be held in the coming stage to discuss peace issues.
